Approach

Our approach is based on the foundation of three practices:

Reflexive Practice: The ability to analyse one’s own practice against a variety of benchmarking frameworks. This would build connections with: emotional literacy, self-awareness, motivation, and systemic influences including parental, cultural, societal, economic etc.

• Non-Oppressive Practice: The use of relevant theories and concepts to actively expose and transform prejudice both in ourselves and others.

• Inter-Disciplinary Practice: The ability to use a variety of professional disciplines in thinking and behaviour to enable the service to become more accessible. We also recognise the importance of the practical application of child development and counselling theories, and of the human qualities required to be effective.

It consists of five separate yet closely connected ‘layers’ of reflection and action. Paying close attention to these different strata of suggestion and guidance has the effect of not only improving the quality and effectiveness of the work of practitioners, policy makers and funders, but also of providing useful reference points in the navigation of difficulties.

The five ‘layers’ are:

Young Person’s Version

PPP have considered the question of how the Framework could be articulated to young people.  This led to the development of a shortened, more ‘child-friendly’ version, which PPP includes in its ‘Student Diaries’ and distributes to all young people supported by PPP.

Illustration of the Framework: “The Pirate”

The following cartoon was developed as a way of illustrating the relationship between the five layers of the Framework.  It represents only one of many possible ways in which these relationships can be experienced, but we feel it is the most useful we have so far discovered, and hope that it is of some use to others in their own explorations.
